About the words
Right Line, Wrong Speaker
It is an evening at Netherfield. Mr Darcy is reading. Caroline Bingley, who very much wants his attention, picks up a book of her own, and Austen tells us she chose it only because it was the second volume of his. Then comes the great yawn, and the declaration: there is no enjoyment like reading!
She throws the book aside within a few lines. The scene is a joke at her expense, and a perfect one. But the line itself survived the joke: it happens to be true, and it sounds better said by someone who means it. For those of us who do, the speaker may be wrong, but the sentence is not.
Why we chose it: a lovely compliment to reading, delivered by someone who was not doing it, and still entirely right.
