About the words
October Beats June, Politely
Helen Hunt Jackson opens her poem by addressing June directly. All those suns and skies, all those flowers, she says, and none of them can rival, even for an hour, October's bright blue weather.
It is a very polite way to say that the quieter season wins. The rest of the poem makes the case with a belated bumble-bee, grapes in the lanes and chestnuts falling without a sound. Jackson, who corresponded with Emily Dickinson and wrote fiercely on public questions, put this one down as pure delight.
It is a poem for anyone who feels October arrive before the calendar says so.
Why we chose it: it says what October feels like in four lines.
