About the words
Boats Against the Current
Nick Carraway has watched Gatsby's story to its end, and he is left thinking about a green light at the end of a dock: a future that recedes year by year, however much faster we run.
Then comes the sentence. We keep rowing, it says, and the current carries us back. It doesn't say which wins. The book came out in April 1925 to mixed reviews and modest sales, and in 1940, the year Fitzgerald died, it was selling a handful of copies a month. Today the line is on his headstone.
Read it as a lament or as a decision to keep going. It is both.
Why we chose it: it is both a lament and a decision to keep rowing.
